1941 - 1982
Our Parish was originally part of our neighboring Parish, Our Lady and St Philip Neri. Between 1941 and 1966, in Fr. Bevington's time, there were various attempts made to provide mass for the people of Upper Sydenham. Fortunately, in 1969 Fr Larn, the parish priest of Our Lady and St Philip Neri Later Cannon, acquired the site of our church, previously occupied by St Bartholomew's school.
The church was then finished being built in 1974. this project was orchestrated by Fr. Nigel Larn and he made sure mass was then provided at this site. However, for a number of years, Mass continued to be celebrated by priests, curates and visiting priests coming from the church in lower Sydenham.
David Mancini in his memories which appeared in the Alive magazine says that even sacristans were supplied by our neighboring church. It was not until Fr Michael Cooley was the priest regularly celebrating mass that David Mancini and Terry Kelly became the sacristans sharing the two masses between them. He goes on to describe Terry as a Leading light in the congregation who did so much to help the community develop.
Fr Michael Cooley was to be sent to another Parish, Following after Fr Jim Murphy and sometime Fr Furlong continued to celebrate Mass here coming from the lower church.
1982 - 2006
On the 24th of September 1982, the church then became consecrated and in 1987 it became a separate Parish from Our Lady and St Philip Neri and
Fr Nigel Leaper became the first parish priest.
In December 1990, Fr Paul Forest joined our parish Fr Paul Forest stayed with us until 1993.
In early May Fr David Gummett took over from Fr Paul Forest and he had stayed with us for a very long time.
2006 - Present
In 2006, Fr Philip Seed was made parish priest of our church and had stayed with us for four years.
After Four years, Fr Alfred Osamor came from Nigeria as parish administrator and was later inducted as Parish Priest in February 2019.
After staying with us for 12 years, Fr Alfred Osamor left us and Fr Romany Shenouda joined our parish back in September 2023.
Gifts For the Parish
Although the style of the church is plain, we have been fortunate in the gifts which have been given to the church over the years. The figure of the risen Christ on the front of the church was designed by Stephen Sykes and donated by the Fisher family in memory of Patrick Fisher.
The stations of the cross by another well-known artist, Micheal Clark, were given by Eric Misquita, the late husband of Noreen, in memory of his sister Patricia.
The Statue of Our Lady by sister Concordia, a nun from Minster Abby near Ramsgate, came during Fr. Leaper's time.
While Fr Philip was here, we had a friend of the church community gift the church something. Robert Side had made and installed the mosaic at the back of the church. The Mosaic installed is written in Latin and it reads "Ubi caritas et amor deus ibi est" (Where there is kindness and love there is God) and "Laudate Dominum Omnes Gentes" (Praise the Lord and all the Nations)
